River Condition
Assessments (RCA)
A River Condition Assessment (RCA) is used to assess the condition of rivers, streams and other watercourses for Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) purposes. The assessment combines a field survey, known as a Modular River Physical (MoRPh) survey, with a desk-based review of available environmental data to determine the overall condition of the watercourse.
The resulting condition score can then be used within the statutory Biodiversity Metric to establish the baseline biodiversity value of river habitats and inform Biodiversity Net Gain calculations.
Why might a River Condition Assessment be required?
Where a development site contains, or has the potential to affect, a river, stream or other watercourse, a River Condition Assessment may be required as part of the Biodiversity Net Gain process.
The assessment considers a range of physical and ecological characteristics of the watercourse, including channel form, bank structure, flow diversity, vegetation, sediment characteristics and surrounding riparian habitat. These factors are assessed against a series of condition indicators to determine the overall condition of the river habitat.
Identifying opportunities for enhancement
A River Condition Assessment not only establishes the baseline condition of a watercourse but can also help identify opportunities for habitat enhancement and restoration.
By understanding which condition indicators are limiting the quality of the river habitat, targeted measures can be developed to improve condition and contribute towards achieving Biodiversity Net Gain.
When can a River Condition Assessment be undertaken?
River Condition Assessments can be undertaken throughout much of the year. However, MoRPh field surveys are generally best completed during periods of lower flow when riverbed features are visible and can be accurately assessed.
Spring and early summer are often preferred, as aquatic and bankside vegetation is typically more developed, allowing a more comprehensive assessment of habitat condition.
Why choose Arun Ecology Ltd?
Arun Ecology Ltd can provide River Condition Assessments as a standalone service or as part of a wider Biodiversity Net Gain assessment. Our surveys are undertaken by an RCA Accredited Surveyor, ensuring assessments are completed in accordance with the recognised River Condition Assessment methodology. We provide clear, practical advice to support planning applications, Biodiversity Net Gain calculations and river enhancement opportunities.
