Survey Capability
As a specialist ecological consultancy, we provide the full range of habitat and protected species surveys that you are likely to require as part of the planning process or to ensure compliance as a statutory undertaker of permitted developments.
We have a highly qualified in-house team of surveyors who can conduct ecological surveys and advise on when they are required. Most of our team are members of CIEEM and are registered to use the relevant class licences to undertake protected species surveys.
The attention to detail and quality of all our surveys means you can rely on Arun Ecology to get it right the first time, ensuring that you receive the correct advice to move your project forward whilst remaining confident your project is ecologically compliant.

Why do you require ecology surveys?
Planning authorities have a statutory duty to have regard for material planning considerations when delivering their functions, which includes having regard for the conservation and enhancement for the improvement of biodiversity.
The duty on local planning authorities includes considering how a development might impact ‘protected’ and priority species and habitats as well as designated sites when determining planning applications.
Where planning is not required, ecological surveys are a way to demonstrate you have taken reasonable care to avoid impacts to protected species and habitats. Surveys can help to avoid any wildlife offences being committed and also give you a demonstratable audit trail to show your project is compliant with the legislation protecting biodiversity.
When can you complete ecology surveys?
When an ecological survey can take place depends on the type of survey. Whilst some surveys can be completed all year around, others are time constrained. It is important to understand how surveys will fit into your project schedule at the earliest stage to avoid any unnecessary delays.
Ecological surveys should also be completed prior to the submission of a planning application. Failure to do so could result in the planning application being refused.
