Phase 1 Habitat Survey

A Phase 1 habitat survey is the field based survey of a Preliminary Ecological Appraisal (PEA), which is a standard assessment required by Local Planning Authorities for planning applications to consider the likely impacts on biodiversity.

The Phase 1 habitat survey is used as a rapid habitat assessment to categorise habitats present within a study area and can be used to assess the potential for these habitats to support protected species and species of conservation concern.

The survey is normally undertaken in a single visit and can be completed at any time of year. However, the optimum period to undertake this survey is between April and September.

Our Phase 1 habitat surveys are supported by digital mapping using GIS software for accurate and easy to follow results to implement into your design plans.

Is a Phase 1 survey detailed enough for your project?

If your development proposals are likely to require a Biodiversity Net Gain assessment, you may require a more detailed habitat assessment to support your planning application. In such a case, the UK Habitat Classification Survey will be more appropriate. See our dedicated page on UK Habitat Classification.
